Spotlight: Savvas Christou (Waverley Old Boys)
This week we speak to Savvas Christou, coach of Reserve Grade League Champions, Waverley Old Boys.
What does it mean to win the Premier League Reserve Grade this year?
Our main objective was to win the league so we're delighted! I'm pleased for all of the coaches, support staff and the players in particular. The boys have worked very hard for this and we rightly earned the league title. Their attitude in training and games has been excellent and was reflected as we won 15 out of 18 games. A fantastic achievement. In addition, it's a significant milestone for the Club as we become the first Waverley Premier League side to win the league, coinciding with the Club's 10-year anniversary.
What have you thought of the competition this season?
Very competitive, as per last season. There are some very good players and teams in the league. There have been no easy games.
Biggest factor to winning the League?
The camaraderie amongst the squad has been first class since day one of pre-season. Even in games when we were performing below our best, the collective desire to win has pulled us through. The boys are all enjoying their football so it's made my job easy.
Looking ahead to the final at Hensley, how do you think the synthetic surface will influence the teams?
Hensley is a great venue for the final. All four finals teams will be highly motivated to play there. The playing surface is excellent - encouraging open, attacking football. However, the finalists need to earn the right to play there and therefore we're solely focusing on this Saturday.
Who would you like to face in the finals?
No preferences. We've had good, tough games against Dunbar, Coogee and Glebe this season.
